Studying his Bible and growing in faith over many years, John Newton eventually changed from a slave boat captain to a preacher and ardent abolitionist (someone who advocated freedom for slaves).  What do you think he might have been remembering when he wrote the words "saved a wretch like me" in Amazing Grace?  Nine months before his death, parliament voted to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire.  John rejoiced to hear the news.  He died that same year at the age of 82.
